How to care for your breast prosthesis
To many women their breast prosthesis is an extension of themselves. After undergoing a mastectomy a prosthesis can aid women in regaining dignity, respect and love for their bodies. Giving your body back its natural symmetry, Arula breast prostheses are designed and fitted for weight, shape, movement, and above all, comfort.
Breast prostheses are made to withstand daily use however, to ensure their longevity, regular care is essential.
Hand washing is the best way to prevent any wear and tear to your prosthesis. A little extra love and care by gentle hand washing compared to machine washing will go a long way!
A great way to implement this into your daily routine is to simply bring your breast form into the shower with you to wash. Avoid any harsh chemicals that can damage the soft outer layers of prosthesis, simply use a mild unscented soap or cleanser. We recommend using lukewarm water, your choice of gentle soap and a non abrasive washcloth. You can choose to either let your breast form air dry or blot it dry with a soft towel. Avoid wringing out excess water as this may cause the prosthesis to deform.
Daily and careful cleaning like this gives you the best chance to clean away the natural oils and sweat that builds up after a day of wear to ensure your prosthesis stays in its best shape.
We recommend not only to perform daily washing but ensure care is taken with the storage of your prosthesis. Your Arula prosthesis will arrive in a specially made box containing a stand. This has been designed to allow airflow to dry and air the form overnight. Designed to be worn with mastectomy bras, we advise to simply remove your prosthesis before going to bed and place it on its designated stand to ensure its shape and quality is maintained. If you choose not to wear your prosthesis during the day then it is best kept in its box or on the stand in a dry and cool area to avoid direct sunlight that may deteriorate the outer layers of silicone.
